McCain in town

Republican presidential nominee John McCain arrived in Jacksonville this evening after spending part of the day at a NASCAR race in New Hampshire. The Arizona senator landed at Jacksonville International Airport around 6:20 p.m. before boarding his Straight Talk Express campaign bus for a 30-minute ride downtown. McCain did not give interviews, but does plan to speak to reporters after a Monday rally at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, campaign officials said. His stop here is part of a two-day tour of Florida, a state where polls show he has a slight edge over Democratic nominee Barack Obama.  A team of law enforcement and security agents began assembling hours before McCain's arrival, although he'd landed about an hour before expected. A television in the airport waiting area was showing a profile of McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, on MSNBC. Earlier, some of the agents had been watching a football game. McCain is scheduled to appear at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena Monday at 9 a.m. Palin is not scheduled for the event, but has plans to campaign in Jacksonville next month.
