    Sorting through a 416-page budget that details how $18 billion is to be spent takes time and research. The House and Senate appropriations committees will meet jointly to hear from the heads of the state’s largest agencies.

  • Mike Weinstein named head of Clay Legislative Delegation Sat, 01/16/2010 - 1:00am

    The Clay County Legislative Delegation elected state Rep. Mike Weinstein of Jacksonville as its new chairman and state Rep. Charles Van Zant Sr. of Keystone Heights as its new vice chairman.

    They will hold those leadership positions until December 2010. The outgoing chairwoman was state Rep. Jennifer Carroll of Fleming Island; vice chairman was Weinstein.

  • House panel kills Seminole pact, approves gambling changes Thu, 01/14/2010 - 8:15pm

    TALLAHASSEE — A House panel unanimously shot down a gambling deal between the state and the Seminole Tribe on Thursday, dealing a new setback to Gov. Charlie Crist’s negotiations with the tribe.

    The vote by the House Select Committee on Seminole Indian Compact Review kills another version of the pact with the Seminoles, who operate seven casinos on tribal land despite the lack of an agreement with the state.

    The governor started his swing through Jacksonville at Lender Processing Services (NYSE: LPS), which employs about 2,100 of its 8,400 employees nationwide in Jacksonville and has plans to add hundreds more.
